Pending scheduling negotiations, Dane DeHaan could be joining Alicia Vikander in 17th Century romantic drama “Tulip Fever,” according to Britain’s The Daily Mail. The paper cautions that it’s tentative as there are concerns that “Tulip Fever” may conflict with DeHaan’s commitment to James Dean biopic “Life” opposite Robert Pattinson.
Vikander will play Sophia, the young wife of an aristocrat in the long-gestating adaptation of Deborah Moggach’s novel. When her wealthy husband hires an artist to paint their portrait, Sophia falls for the artist instead. The story is set against the backdrop of tulipmania in Amsterdamn as the two forbidden lovers scheme to invest in the tulip trade to make enough money to run away together. Oscar heavyweight Harvey Weinstein is producing the film, and has set Justin Chadwick to direct. Earlier reports indicated Chadwick was interested in Matthias Schoenaerts to play the male lead role of the artist, but it’s unclear if DeHaan is in talks for that role or a different one.
DeHaan is one of the most exciting young actors on the rise at the moment, currently seen as Lucien Carr opposite Daniel Radcliffe in Beat generation origin tale “Kill Your Darlings.” He broke out in “Chronicle,” impressed in Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines” and recently wrapped up playing Harry Osborn opposite Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
