Spider Man
Andrew Garfield is returning to theaters next summer in a role that made him a hero. That role, of course, is Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man. Just last year, Garfield took on the iconic Marvel superhero role in Marc Webb‘s reboot. Today, Sony and Columbia Pictures have unveiled the first teaser trailer for the film’s aptly titled sequel “The Amazing-Spider Man 2.”

Returning alongside Garfield from the first film are Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben (in flashback scenes). For this sequel, Webb recruited an all-star cast of veteran actors: Jamie Foxx as Electro, Paul Giamatti as The Rhino and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. Also cast are rising stars Dane DeHaan as Peter’s frenemy Harry Osborn and Felicity Jones in a yet to be revealed role.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Peter Parker’s alias Spider-Man finds himself challenged with the rise of two new villains, Electro and The Rhino, who are both threatening the city of New York. If that wasn’t enough problems on his hands, Peter’s old friend Harry Osborne returns. (As we all know, both Harry and his father famously took turns in the villainous role of the Green Goblin.) Under all this chaos, Peter comes to realization that all of his enemies are somehow connected by a single thing: OsCorp.

With all these new villains in the same film, let’s hope this sequel doesn’t bite up more than it can chew. We’ve seen what can happen in a Spider-Man film if there’s too many new characters that aren’t handled properly. *Cough* Spider-Man 3 *Cough* With that not too subtle snide remark aside, here’s hoping this sequel takes a cue from Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” instead and finds a balance in giving each character a decent amount of character development and screen time.

Notably absent from the trailer is Shailene Woodley as Peter Parker’s new red-haired love interest, Mary Jane Watson (Unless you count the brief shot of her back at 2:06). Despite the fact that she filmed scenes with both Garfield and Stone, Woodley revealed back in June that her character had not made the film’s final cut. Honestly, I’m still not over her exclusion from the film. I would have liked to have seen her interpretation of the character. But on the bright side, we can look forward to seeing her in both “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars.”

At just under three minutes long, the first trailer delivers the action and thrills you come to expect from a Marvel superhero movie. Although the trailer revolved heavily on the rising new threats (with Jamie Foxx’s Electro being the main focus), we still managed to get some glimpses of Peter and Gwen, a couple whose chemistry definitely benefitted the first film. Another highlight for me was all the footage of Dane DeHaan as Harry Obsorne. With Woodley now out of the picture, DeHaan’s performance is my most anticipated.

Finally, another notable moment in the trailer for me was the opening scene, which shows Spider-Man’s back as he slowly flies down from the sky. Simple? Yes. But it still stood out from all the CGI heavy action sequences that followed.

“The Amazing-Spider Man 2″ is scheduled for a May 2, 2014 release date in North America, followed by the U.K. on April 18. Check out the film’s first trailer below and let us know what you think!
