“Chronicle” was one of the best surprises at the cinema in recent years, but for one reason or another, a sequel, which should have been a guarantee given how successful the original film was, never came together. Director Josh Trank moved on (to “Fantastic Four,” among other projects), its trio of young stars did as well – Dane DeHaan to massive things, Michael B. Jordan also to “Fantastic Four” and even more massive things, Alex Russell to.. um, let’s move on – but it appears Fox hasn’t given up on the franchise potential of this found footage superhero tale just yet.
Today Deadline reports that Fox has hired a new screenwriter to write “Chronicle 2.” The sequel was originally going to be written by the who wrote “Chronicle,” Max Landis, but that never came together either. It’s unclear what direction the studio and the film’s new screenwriter Jack Stanley will take the sequel, since we left the first film – SPOILER ALERT – with DeHaan’s Andrew and Jordan’s Steve deceased, leaving only Russell’s Matt surviving and still dealing with his newfound superpowers.
So maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that Russell’s career hasn’t quite taken off the same way DeHaan’s and Jordan’s have, since Matt is the one character who would need to return if this is indeed a continuation of the first film’s story, and not a “reboot” following a brand new group of kids discovering the strange alien ooze and gaining superpowers all over again. No word on when we might see this, but I’m just glad it’s not dead, because I want more “Chronicle,” please.
